Mitsubishi Paint Stinks I purchasd a 2003 Spyder in black, as soon as my warranty ran out I started to get white sopts on the hood, then my dash started to crack. no luck trying to talk to the company, they could care less. since my problem I have noticed many Eclipse in my area with the same problem, mostly black ones but I have also seen the problem in some silver ones as well. Unless you plan to pay for a new paint job I suggest that you stay away from Mitsubishi.........It amazes me how many I see just here in Georgia where I live, imagine in all the other states how many there must be. I was so excited when I got this car but now I wish I had bought something else.

@#$% Where to start? I just replaced the transmission last week. Picked the car up on Friday which means oh til about Sunday morning for the check engine light to come on. Dash has been cracked for a while, the speedometer cover is nearly detatching itself. Headlight connectors have melted on both sides, on my second convertible top now and most likely going for a 3rd. Ok one was the fault of the lovely idiots at sound advice (put an amp behind the seat and it hit it - not to mention they grounded the amp to my gas tank . . . which also had to be replaced)
Where was I? I've replaced all 4 rotors and pads yet there is noise, the trim around the convertible top is shot and leaks. Add that to the top issues and you can splash around on my driver's side carpet.
I'm sure thats not it either . . .

2000 Red Eclipse GT, fully loaded I bought a red 2000 Eclipse GT, fully loaded, in 2001 - 1 year old with 6,000 miles. I've had some problems, but it's been a great car for me. Yes, I have some paint chips, but the car is low to the ground and we have lots of gravel trucks around here. I have a ton of windshield nicks but no cracks. Rocks just seem to be attracted to this car and easily bounce up on the hood. I have 88,000 miles now, have had one brake job, and had to replace one oxygen sensor and 1 fog light (hit by a rock) since my warranty expired. While under warranty, I had sunroof problems (bent rails) and had the whole thing replaced once, including the motor. This is a defective sunroof and they never recalled it. They claim you have to use their "special grease" on the rails, but no matter how much grease it has on it, I still have to reach up and push the roof up while pressing the button most of the time. I've never had any leaks. I did have problems with my 4-disc CD changer while under warranty, and the dealer put another one in and it's been fine. If it goes out, I won't be spending $1500 for an anti-theft unit from Mitsubishi. I do have a problem in the winter months with the driver door not closing all the way unless I really slam it hard. I believe it was stated in the 3G forum that this has something to do with the expansion/contraction of all that plastic sealing around the window. Sure enough, if I lower the window a little, it'll close all the way, but I usually don't take the time. My dash is cracked in 5 places. This is the first car I've ever had where the dash cracked. It's only the piece closest to the windshield and I haven't priced it yet. My spouse thinks it's because of Armor-All. My red paint is fading a little, but it's not streaked or anything. I have a cousin married to a body-shop owner and he told me that red, or any color with a lot of red in it, fades more than any other color. I have no rust on the outside or under the hood. It holds an alignment very well. I've had it checked, but have never had to align it.
My local Mitsubishi dealership (only one in town) is in Baton Rouge, LA. I go in there and chit-chat with the service ticket writers and the parts guys and they have been good to me. Every time I've had my car serviced, I get a letter from Mitsubishi asking me to rate the dealership. This is because there have been some major complaints about Mitsubishi long before I bought one. The employees know that I'm going to get this letter, and the letter asks who waited on you and asks all about your experience. I always send it in.

Silver Eclipse Paint Delamination The silver eclipses have the same problem as the black ones. This should be covered under the 7 year bumper to bumper warranty. Started step 1) Had the dealer take pictures and submit the service request to Mitsubishi HQ. But the service manager was a real ass about it. He kept saying, "If it ain't black they won't fix it!". I was polite. I expect to get rejected (based on his crapy attitude) and have to take them to small claims court. I sure do hope not. If they fix it, I would buy another Mitsubishi when this one wears out. If not, I and everyone I know or ever meet will ban them for life.

Identical to #849 Not sure what else to do...... any suggestions ?
#849 wrote; I own a 2003 Eclipse (2.4L) that has a cooling problem. I bought the car from (and it has been serviced by)Harrisonburg (VA) Mitsubishi. The car ran at a constant indicated temperature until about three months ago. Suddenly while driving, the heater began blowing cold air. Then the temperature gauge shot up almost to the danger mark. What made this more unusual was that when the temp went up the car was actually headed down a steep mountain road. As soon as the car was on the level and I began accelerating, the temp went down, but it had not gone up during the 1-2 mile ascent! Then it ran fine. Now it will run for a few days at normal temp, and then without warning, will start to heat up. During the course of having the timing belt replaced a leaking water pump was discovered and replaced. The thermostat was replaced. The coolant was replaced. Problem does not go away. Every time it starts to run warm and I check the coolant, the level has dropped about half a quart. But the overflow reservoir never goes up or down. The Service Manager finally said it must be a blockage in the radiator because the bottom is cooler than the top. Heat rises. I know that, he knows that, and I still have the problem. The coolant is clean, the cars runs normally (for an Eclipse, I guess), and I can't pin point the problem. Compression is 200 psi across the board (checked it this morning) and the coolant is going somewhere I can't determine. Is there anyone with a similar problem?

2002 Eclipse owner with all the fix!!!!!! I have been reading thru the posts and I thought I might help everyone out. I am a 2003 GT owner. I have had some problems, however caught them before they turned into major deals. One thing we must consider is each the production of autos gets cheaper and cheaper. Most of us cut corners in our everyday life, so why shouldn’t our car companies. Ok, let’s get to it. Hopefully I can answerer some questions and prevent any ill fortune.
1.PAINT
Although Mitsubishi’s paint isn’t the highest of quality, it should last at least 8 to 9 years. Most paints these days can’t stand up to the weather. If you have these colors, White, Pearl, Silver, Tan/ Tope or Blue. You are lucky. I suggest a good wax like Magiers. Do not wash your car at the car wash with one of those brushes. Your paint is applied in a very thin coat and the brush can cause very fine scratches. This will cause faded or rusted areas. Always use a sponge and take the time to treat your cheap paint well. For those who have the darker paint colors such as, Black, Red, Burgundy, Grey, etc. You might have some problems. The undercoat can have a chemical reaction with your color coat. This is why your paint fades or wears faster than most. The only thing you can do is take extra care when washing. If you live in a coastal area I would suggest forking out a couple hundred to have an auto body shop put a good clear coat on before you get any fading.
2. SUNROOF/ MOONROOF
If you have a leaky issue it could be two things. The weather stripping has hardened do to extreme hot or cold weather. Always park in a covered area or use a car cover. Every year of extreme hot or cold weather can take two years off of the life of your cars appearance and performance. Your window might need to be aligned. If you drive at speeds over 50mph with your widow open you can put to much stress on the opening mechanism. This will cause it to stray from its track a bit. If your window doesn’t open properly (if you have to push it open or it shakes) this might be the case. This will give a poor seal and cause a leak. 3. DASHBOARD
Cracks can accrue with, once again…. Weather. There are two screws under the dash near the main windshield defroster vents. In hot weather the 11 inches on either side of these screws will expand, while the areas between these screws will stay put. Once the dash has cooled the plastic will retract. This will cause stress points and overtime the dash will crack. Remember to cover your dashboard with window shades or a carpet dash cover. Your windshield will act as a magnifying glass due to its size, shape and angle. You can help condition you dash with a good a plastic guard. DO NOT USE ARMORALL!!!!! Although this product has been on the marked for years it is actually bad for your cars surfaces. Over time it will dry out you plastic, vinyl or rubber. Sun of a gun is a good product. Do your research before using any chemical on your car.
4.ELECTRICAL
Most electrical problems can be caused by overload. If you have your car all tricked out you might notice you lights dimming or a poor battery charge. The electrical system wasn’t meant for this type of load. The best solution is to install an additional battery. If you have the know how or know a good shop it is actually very easy. You can actually fit to batteries in the original battery area. You will need to fashion a new battery tray but you won’t have any clearance problems if you drop the dray down an inch and a half. Next get two compact batteries and run them with a parallel connection. This will give your car a better charging system. Because you are running these batteries parallel, this will not change your voltage it will only give a lighter work load for you alternator. 5. BRAKES
If you didn’t get the best brake parts when you purchased you Mitsubishi, here is what you need to do. Go out to your car, take off the tires then take all of you brake drums or discs and throw them away! The metal of the stock parts are weak. If you get a shaking in you wheels when you stop, it is your rotors or drums. These things will warp with the slightest of temperature change. If you drive your car to the carwash and rinse your wheels with the sprayer…… well your rotors are warped. You could get everything resurfaced and re-warped in the same day. Save yourself the headache and buy some descant brake parts. For about $400.00 you could get good quality parts. This will also get rid of that annoying squeak you might have gotten use to. Do this ASAP, that shaking could case more sever problems in the future.
6.HEATER (cooling system) Have you noticed that your heater isn’t getting warm right away? Or maybe at an idol the air goes cold. This could be a few things. First is the Thermostat, make sure you have the proper temperature in your car. The # or temperature on the part will determine when the thermostat opens. Second, check your radiator fluid is full. This is a common thing to over look. If your radiator isn’t full then the circulation isn’t proper, causing the water hoses to run dry and lose heat. Although the engine will begin to overheat your heating core won’t receive any warmth at all. This leads us to the Third issue. Your hoses might be leaking. After about 40,000 miles the radiator hose clamps will begin to give out. Eventually you will see some build up around the end of each hose. This will cause your water pump to pull air thru the small spaces in the build up. To resolve this problem all you have to do is replace your clamps. Remove all hoses that are associated with your engines cooling system and clean them good. Inspect your gaskets and thermostat while you have everything apart. Once you have cleaned your parts replace every thing and put NEW hose clamps on. This should solve your issue.
I have more information and fixes for you problems. If you have any other issues let me know. These were just a few off the top of my head. Hope they helped.

Another Leak through the front Pillar Bought the car in Aug 2006, had some minor issues, such as the cat converter being bad, dealer did an adjustment, then ran worst (didnt run bad in the first place). Then this morning, I get out in the car and notice that passenger side pillar is leaking...started smelling electrical burn type smell...what makes it worse is I've got to drive the thing 70 miles because the dealership I bought it from closed down. I'll keep you posted.

2000 Eclipse GS I purchased my Eclipse in 2001. The black paint clear coat started fading within the first three years. Over the course of one year the paint faded so rapidly that now at least 90% of the paint has turned grayish/white. It looks horrible. Every time I mention it to a dealership they claim that they have never heard of such a problem even though I see the same vehicle with the same problems all over the place. Now, about a year ago, I noticed a crack in the dashboard that within one year turned into five vertical cracks. I am very disappointed with this vehicle and would certainly not ever consider buying one again! Three days ago I started noticing a strange noise coming from the rear passenger side...sounds like a knocking/hammering noise....did anybody else have this problem?

2000 Kalapana Black Eclipse paint problems I too have a black 2000 Eclipse that started having paint problem about a year and a half ago. Now, the entire roof, trunk lid and spoiler are affected. Has there been any word from Mitsubishi on this issue? Obviously, this is a common problem.

2000 Black Eclipse GT I own a 2000 eclipse GT. The paint job is horrible!!! It has been a very big and embarrassing ordeal.
I know about 5 other people with the same issue as mine. I have also read on mitsubishisucks.com of other carowners with this same issue, not only with the eclipse, but other models like the Lancer, Galant and diamonte. My entire car from front to back is a big eye sore. My car is black and it is so terrible to look at white spots all over from clear coating chipping off and bubbling up then it flakes off. If I try to wash my car my paint flies off and makes the clearcoat worse. Something has to be done about this. I have been fighting this for a very long time and I will never own another Mitsubishi anything. Not a sole within that company will help. Chevrolet had a problem a while back with some of their cars paint jobs and guess what they issued a recall for those that were effected. I think the same should be for Mitsubishi. It is only Fair and the right thing to do. I would love to be able to enjoy the car that I have worked so hard for and now the car is paid off and still no recall or no help with this same ongoing issue. I found your site in researching this. I hope you can help. I am even thinking about hiring a lawyer to get Mitsubishi to pay for my car to be repainted. I haven’t had it repainted because I feel I should not have to pay for it. It is so obvious that it is a manufacture defect. I have had the car looked at several of times and even had estimates done for a paint job, but Mitsubishi still has not made a recall on this particular issue.
It is rusting now. The clearcoat is coming off and bubbling and flaking. I can’t even wash my car anymore all the paint comes off. This has been going on for about 2 ? years. There needs to be a recall on this. This is ridiculous. Can you please help me? People tell me there is no recall on this issue, but there should be. I really hope you can help me or lead me into the correct direction. Calling MMNA (Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.) is no help at all.

Paint Issues I have a 2003 black Spyder that I bought used last February. The paint on the hood is coming off in chunks. After reading some of your complaints/issues/resolutions, I have emailed the dealership where I bought the car to see if they will paint it at no cost. If not, I will place a call to the local TV station, who likes to bring to light businesses that don't come through on their products. Thanks for confirming that I am not imaging this!
